Dioxin Exposure Attorneys

Dioxin is a highly poisonous compound that results as a by-product in some manufacturing processes that involve chlorine being released into the environment. Primarily airborne, dioxins are often found in the air, soil, and even on food. Prolonged exposure to dioxin can result in the formation of liver and other forms of cancer, fertility problems and birth defects, problems with the immune and/or respiratory systems, and a variety of other serious health afflictions.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), dioxin is introduced into the environment during:

  • the incineration of certain wastes, specifically medical waste and some solid waste
  • forest fires, residential wood burning, and backyard burning of household waste
  • during the process of both copper smelting and cement kiln work
  • the land application of sewage sludge
  • coal fired power plants
  • chlorine bleaching of wood pulp

The majority of dioxin exposure occurs with food. Animals that are exposed to dioxin often carry the compound in their fat, which is consequently transmitted to whoever eats portions of that fat. Food supplies that are in close proximity to any of the above actions and occurrences are susceptible to exposure, as are those who partake in any of the aforementioned activities. Factory workers in particular are at risk for exposure to dioxins, especially since those workers not only work in an environment susceptible to dioxin release, but may also consume local food that has also been exposed. Even more problematic is that dioxin poisoning can pass from a mother to a child if the mother has been exposed to dioxin and chooses to breast feed the child.

The EPA has deemed dioxin as "one of the most dangerous toxic chemicals detrimental to human health." It is estimated that 1 in 10,000 Americans is afflicted by dioxin exposure that results in liver cancer. Dioxin, according to the EPA, "has been medically proven to promote the growth of dormant cancers in the liver."
