Toxic Mold Illness AttorneysToxic MoldMold is defined as "a furry growth of tiny fungi occurring in moist warm conditions." Mold spores, byproducts of mold, can be inhaled into the body just as easily as dust and other irritants can be. However, whereas most irritants pose no imminent danger in the long run, the debilitating effects of mold can bring about respiratory illness and a depreciated quality of life. Some molds are known as "toxigenic molds." This variety of fungi produces mycotoxins, which, if taken into the body in large enough amounts, can actually lead to an array of neurological problems. Although cases such as this are rare, it is emblematic of the potential harm that toxic mold can create. In remodeling a house or other building, it is important that the quality of craftsmanship can and will prevent the growth of mold from ever occurring in the first place. First and foremost, is it important that materials used are not already laden with mold spores, thus unintentionally bringing the fungi into the home and possibly creating a cause for illness later on. More commonly, the quality of craftsmanship can lead to the promotion of mold in a building. Specifically, if a building is not properly sealed from the elements, and allows moisture to travel into the building, either along wooden beams or within a ceiling, then mold spores can thrive, spreading throughout the inner skeleton of the building and posing a health risk for all inhabitants of that building. Similarly, the issue of a safe work environment can also come into play if a building is laced with mold. Employers have an obligation to provide a safe working environment for employees. However, if mold spores are growing within the skeletal structure of the building, filtering their way into the air supply of unsuspecting employees, then mass illness can take place throughout the work place. This type of illness is commonly associated with "sick building syndrome," an affliction that results when inhabitance or regular presence within a building causes the occupant of that building to become sick for reasons that, at first, are relatively unclear, but are often times relegated to having been caused by mold or some other toxic substance in the building.
